As fall rolls around, you should schedule some time to provide your lawn with a little extra attention. Planting tall fescue during the fall season can provide you with a lush and green colored lawn throughout the fall, winter and spring in Georgia.

Planting tall fescue during the months of September and October will ensure that your grass is able to establish a strong root system. If you plant your grass during the summer months, it may struggle to develop the extensive root system that is so necessary to make it through a Georgia summer. The heat and stress of the summer is difficult for any type of grass to survive and you want to be sure that your tall fescue has had plenty of time to become established before the winter and summer months.

Preparing your soil for the seeds is crucial. The lawn should be cleared of debris, then it should be tilled with lime and fertilizer. Before seeding the soil should be smoothed. When choosing your seeding, you should find seed that has been certified.  This will be evident by a blue tag.

When the seed has been equally dispersed, it will then need to be kept moist but not wet. Watering the seed for the first three weeks with about 1/8 or 1/4inch goal in mind should suffice. The seed should germinate in about 5 to 10 days and be ready to be mowed between 2 and 3 weeks.

When you first start mowing your lawn, mow it at a height of 2 inches. As the grass matures, raise the cutting height to about 3 inches. If you need to reseed any of the areas, you will need to mow at a height of 1 to 1.5 inches so the new seeds can come into contact with the ground.

If you are looking to seed successfully, you have to ensure that your soil is prepared properly, that the seed is able to come into full contact with the soil and that you are prepared to water the grass on a regular basis.
