Caterpillar Tips June 24th, 2011

Mr. Weedy says: if you notice big green caterpillars in your vegetable garden and are wondering what they are you are probably looking at beautiful swallowtail butterflies. Please relocate them from your garden and try not to kill them if you can help it. A local nature preserve would be happy to take them off your hands if you put them in a jar with a lid with holes so the insect can receive oxygen.

Brown Patch fungus June 10th, 2011

Mr. Weedy says: if you notice circular, dead, brown spots in your lawn you could have Brown patch fungus. Mr. Weedy Says: Applying rocks in the bottom of houseplant containers if definitely not a good idea. The rocks will actually decrease drainage and aeration for the plant roots. This will cause the pots to hold water not allowing the roots to breathe leading to root rot.

What’s the best time to water your grass? Generally there are many different theories on this question, try 10:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. This will allow the grass to dry before nightfall the next day and prevents disease and insect problems.
