Gardening During the Winter Months

It can be hard to not get antsy as a gardener in Georgia right now. Even though the warm temperatures start to peek through the cold ones, your plants are still going to be in their winter dormancy. While your plants are in their winter dormancy, there are still things that you can do around your garden to make sure that you are ready for spring.

Start by taking time to think about what kind of garden you want this year.  Walk through your garden beds to help you envision where you want plants to go and how you can make everything fit within your garden beds. While you are walking through your garden beds, you should also take note of any changes that Winter gardenwill need to be made. Write these changes down so you can remember what you need to do.

While you are planning out your garden, don’t be afraid to mark your garden area. You can use popsicle sticks or even plastic forks and knives to section out different parts of your garden.  When you can section out your garden visually, you may be able to see problems that you would not have caught before you planted otherwise.

Throughout these winter months, take advantage of the time that you have to research and plan.  You can do enough prep work to ensure that you are going to be able to have a fruitful and plentiful garden when the time to plant rolls around. It may not feel like a lot of fun now, but it will be worth it in the long run!
